HEXHAM
Defence Witness (IRE)
carpetgallop.co.uk Handicap Chase (Go North Red Rum Series Qualifier)
- Finish
- 1st of 7
- Race winner
- Defence Witness
Defence Witness came from towards the rear and recovered from interference at the 14th fence and again from a loose horse two out. He moved into second before the last and caught C'mon So near the line to win by a neck. His strong finish gave us the first lay loss.
AINTREE
Stencil
BetMGM Haldon Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 2) (Limited Handicap Chase) (GBB Race)
- Finish
- 6th of 6
- Race winner
- Rubaud
Stencil stayed close enough to the leaders for much of the race but could not match their pace two fences from home. He dropped to last and weakened, finishing well beaten behind Rubaud. This was the clearest defeat among the day's three lay wins.
HEXHAM
After Many Days
Debra Corner Happy Birthday Handicap Hurdle (Go North Brindisi Breeze Series Qualifier)
- Finish
- 5th of 10
- Race winner
- De Deli Counter
After Many Days raced in midfield but lost ground when the pace increased before the second-last hurdle. He kept going on the run-in without getting back into contention, finishing fifth of ten. De Deli Counter led throughout and held off Crafty Gael.
NEWCASTLE
Admiral Leach (IRE)
AWC Finals Day At Newcastle 26th March Nursery Handicap
- Finish
- 5th of 11
- Race winner
- Eagle Storm
Admiral Leach raced prominently and took the lead two furlongs out, so he was a serious threat. He was passed with more than a furlong remaining and faded in the final 110 yards, finishing fifth of eleven behind Eagle Storm. The result was less comfortable than fifth place might suggest.
DUNDALK
Booyea (IRE)
BAR 1 Betting '2Up Early Payout' Handicap
- Finish
- 1st of 8
- Race winner
- Booyea
Booyea led early, then settled in second after being passed. He regained the lead with more than a furlong to run and kept enough in reserve to hold Jolly Roger by a neck. He sustained his effort to the finish, giving us the second lay loss.
Looking ahead
What we learned / things to watch
Both losses underline the need to check finishing strength: Defence Witness overcame interference, while Booyea regained the lead and held on. Early setbacks or being passed do not always mean a horse is beaten.
Keep reading beyond the finishing position. Admiral Leach led late before fading, whereas Stencil and After Many Days lost touch with the main contenders earlier. Those are different kinds of lay win.
