The card

Race-by-race

Each note pairs the published result with the most useful detail from the race comments.

13:20

GOWRAN PARK

Horse did not win

Drumgill (IRE)

Noreside Catering Handicap Chase

Finish
2nd of 7
Race winner
Golden Joy

Drumgill came from towards the rear to take second two fences out and challenged Golden Joy at the last. He could not sustain that challenge on the run-in and finished 3½ lengths behind. This was a lay win, but he remained a serious threat late in the race.

14:25

AINTREE

Horse won

Taurus Bay (IRE)

Boodles Rising Stars Novices' Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race)

Finish
1st of 4
Race winner
Taurus Bay

Taurus Bay stayed close to the leader and took over before the final fence as No Drama This End faded. Talk To The Man challenged, but Taurus Bay found enough to win by 1¼ lengths on his chasing debut. His strong finish gave us the day's only lay loss.

14:35

KELSO

Horse did not win

Jirko (FR)

Fifty Shades Of Earl Grey Novices' Handicap Chase (Go North Forgive 'N Forget Series Qualifier)

Finish
5th of 5
Race winner
Burning It Up

Jirko followed the leaders and moved into second despite hitting the 12th fence. He came under pressure before two out and was already weakening when he made a bad mistake at the last. He finished last of five behind Burning It Up; the final error compounded an effort that was fading.

15:00

AINTREE

Horse did not win

French Ship

Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (Pertemps Hurdle Series Qualifier) (GBB Race)

Finish
11th of 14
Race winner
Idem

French Ship shared the early lead but was hampered after the first hurdle and dropped back. An untidy jump at the ninth added to his difficulties, and he made no impression after two out. He finished 11th of 14, well behind Idem, with the early interference worth remembering.

15:55

DONCASTER

Horse did not win

Fine Interview (FR)

Virgin Bet Daily Extra Places Handicap

Finish
5th of 22
Race winner
Crestofdistinction

Fine Interview raced towards the rear of the far-side group and switched right with over a furlong to run. He made late ground to finish fifth of 22, but never reached a challenging position. Crestofdistinction had already gone clear, so the late progress did not threaten the winner.

Looking ahead

What we learned / things to watch

Taurus Bay showed why a small field needs a close look at every runner: when the favourite faded, he was ready to take advantage and still had enough to beat another challenger. A stronger-looking favourite alone is not a convincing reason to oppose a horse.

Read beyond the finishing position. Drumgill challenged at the last, Fine Interview made late ground, and French Ship suffered early interference. Keep those details in view when judging the day and checking their next races.
